Barbuda: A microcosm of global rights issues - watch the important discussion now

The land grab in Barbuda has escalated in recent weeks with an armed police presence on island overseeing land clearing and the enclosure of the commons. Solidarity with Barbuda is more important than ever.

GLAN hosted a conversation on Barbuda with local and international experts on the links to the crisis in Barbuda to the erosion of customary land rights globally and the climate emergency, with a Caribbean perspective.

Our expert panel was facilitated by YaYa Marin Coleman, who identifies as a spirit having a Afrikan wombman experience in this realm. As spokesperson for United Black Association for Development Educational Foundation (UEF) in Belize, organizes community initiatives that are rooted in Afrikan descendants interest. UEF focuses on raising awareness about Environmental Justice, Emancipation and Reparations, Solidarity Actions with Haiti and human rights accompaniment work.

Dr Ryan Cecil Jobson is the Neubauer Family Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Chicago. He is a social critic of the Caribbean and the Americas and has been researching Barbuda. His work engages issues of energy, extractivism, states and sovereignty, climate and crisis, race and capital.

Dr Liz Alden Wily is an international expert on community lands; staff at Leiden Law School and a Fellow of three other research and development bodies. She has assisted governments in Asia and Africa to decolonize their property laws to ensure that existing rights in land are not extinguished by outdated forms of property registration.

John Mussington is an Educator, Scientist and Community Advocate. He has worked over the past 3 decades to increase public awareness on the consequences of the climate crisis and the link to environmental destruction due to poor policy decisions. He advocates to influence public policy in Barbuda, as a leader in organisations such as the Barbuda Farming Co-Op and the Barbuda Land Rights & Resources Committee.
